Impacting Radioactive Waste Management
Radioactive waste management is scientifically supported through disposal site performance assessments. A radiological performance assessment (PA) is a quantitative evaluation of potential releases of radioactivity from a disposal facility into the environment, as well as an assessment of the resultant radiological doses to predefined receptors. The performance assessment is a critical component of the regulatory approval process for waste storage facilities. RAC has successfully completed the first approved performance assessment for Waste Control Specialists’ low-level waste facility in Andrews County, Texas, which includes a GoldSim PA model for the Compact Waste Facility (CWF), the Federal Waste Facility (FWF), and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) landfill.
